Prior to Payfirma, Michael founded Versapay Corp. in 2005, a payment-processing company that he took public in 2010. Using his share of the proceeds from Versapay’s IPO, Michael launched Payfirma in 2011. Michael founded Payfirma with the goal of disrupting the highly competitive payments market by creating a solution to merge online, in-store and mobile payments. He has since grown Payfirma from the first company to introduce mobile payments in Canada into one of the top multichannel payment platforms.
Prior to being an award-winning CEO, Michael worked in investment banking and securities law for PI Financial (subsidiary of National Bank of Canada). Michael has been honored as CEO of the Year (Canada), Canadian Top 20 Innovator, Top 40 under 40, and #1 Ranking on HOT 50 (twice), amongst others. A thought leader on payments innovation and entrepreneurial hacks, Michael has contributed content to media sources including Time Magazine, The Financial Post, Venturebeat and The Globe and Mail.
Michael is an active angel investor and mentor in the Canadian Startup Community. He currently sits on the National Board of Advisors for The Next Big Thing Foundation, an accelerator program for young entrepreneurs. He also sits on the HyperGrowth Board, the only second-stage revenue accelerator in BC developing the next generation of billion dollar tech companies.
